Hosted at the OU in Milton Keynes, <em>ASB7<\/em> will focus on habitability beyond the Earth. The Conference will begin at 10:30 on Wednesday 13 September 2017, with talks on biosignatures, ground-based simulation, and remote-sensing observations of habitability.<\/p>\n<p>Confirmed keynote speakers include: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ph.ed.ac.uk\/people\/charles-cockell\">Charles Cockell<\/a>\u00a0(University of Edinburgh \/ UKCA); <a href=\"http:\/\/cbm.cnrs-orleans.fr\/spip.php?article398&amp;lang=fr\">Frances Westall<\/a>\u00a0(CNRS, Orl\u00e8ans); <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/m.a.sephton\">Mark Sephton<\/a>\u00a0(Imperial College London)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Barrie Jones Award Lecture<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As part of the Conference, the <em>Barrie Jones Award Lecture<\/em> will be presented to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LouisaJPreston\">Dr Louisa Preston<\/a>. The Award recognises an individual\u2019s outstanding contribution to society through outreach activities relating to astrobiology. It was established by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/science\/physical-science\/\">School of Physical Sciences<\/a> in partnership with the ASB with the legacy of the late Barrie Jones (1941\u20132014), an astrobiologist who dedicated much of his career to public engagement and outreach.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6142\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6142\" id=\"longdesc-return-6142\" class=\" wp-image-6142\" tabindex=\"-1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/NOMAD_Dr-Manish-Patel-450x600.jpg\" alt=\"Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of STEM, Dr Manish Patel\" width=\"214\" height=\"286\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/ounews.co?longdesc=6142&amp;referrer=6130\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of STEM, Dr Manish Patel<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of STEM at The Open University, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/mrp76#tab1\">Dr Manish Patel<\/a>, is President of the Astrobiology Society of Britain; he said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAstrobiology in the UK, and particularly at the OU, is flourishing \u2013 we are deeply involved in the ExoMars TGO mission, which is currently orbiting Mars and will search for signs of life, and we are also looking forward to an exciting astrobiology Rover mission in the near future. This world-leading research is inspiring the next generation of UK scientists.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very pleased to have Dr Preston as this year\u2019s recipient of the Barrie Jones Award.
