{"id":8427,"date":"2018-04-25T07:52:49","date_gmt":"2018-04-25T07:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=8427"},"modified":"2018-04-25T07:52:49","modified_gmt":"2018-04-25T07:52:49","slug":"voices-of-support-for-the-open-university-and-its-untapped-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/university-news\/voices-of-support-for-the-open-university-and-its-untapped-gold\/","title":{"rendered":"Voices of support for The Open University and its &#8216;untapped gold&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prominent figures across politics, entertainment, science and journalism have all voiced their support for The Open University as it petitions for additional support from the UK government to reduce the costs for part-time students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/around-ou\/ou-speaks-out\/new-reports-keep-up-campaign-for-part-time-learning\/\">Two recent reports from the Sutton Trust and Million Plus<\/a> have evidenced the decline in part-time student numbers in England, and the UK government is now set to include part-time and distance learning in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/prime-minister-launches-major-review-of-post-18-education\">Post-18 Education Review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;Education benefits everyone in society&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Professor Brian Cox, who presented the OU\/BBC co-production <em>The 21st Century Race for Space<\/em>, took to Twitter to advocate a review of funding:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Very strong support on my timeline for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenUniversity?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@OpenUniversity<\/a> from people whose lives have been changed by the opportunity to study at any stage of their lives. Government must look at funding formula so that anyone who wants to study can do so. Education benefits everyone in society.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brian Cox (@ProfBrianCox) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProfBrianCox\/status\/984349510708195328?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And Honorary Graduate Prue Leith also wrote on Twitter of how the OU makes study possible for so many people:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenUniversity?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@OpenUniversity<\/a> is a remarkable British achievement making distance learning and part time study possible for thousands. Funding for part-time students must be reviewed so everyone has the chance to change their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Prue Leith (@PrueLeith) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PrueLeith\/status\/986264079957417984?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 17, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>&#8220;Untapped gold&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/debate\/article-5605607\/DAVID-BLUNKETT-Britain-needs-Open-University.html\">Writing in the Daily Mail<\/a>, Lord David Blunkett, former Secretary of State for Education and Employment, said: &#8220;People needed \u2014 and still need \u2014 the &#8216;second chance&#8217; the OU provided. And Britain needs them.
