{"id":9460,"date":"2018-06-29T17:21:22","date_gmt":"2018-06-29T16:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=9460"},"modified":"2018-06-29T17:21:22","modified_gmt":"2018-06-29T16:21:22","slug":"memories-tell-70-year-history-of-nhs-in-new-bbc-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/health\/memories-tell-70-year-history-of-nhs-in-new-bbc-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Memories tell 70 year history of NHS in new BBC series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday 5 July marks the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/nhs70\/about\/\">70<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the National Health Service<\/a>\u00a0(NHS), one of the nation\u2019s best loved institutions.\u00a0To celebrate this milestone and the vital role it plays in our lives, the OU and the BBC have co-produced <a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/around-ou\/tv-radio\/happy-birthday-nhs-ou-bbc-programmes\/\">three programmes<\/a> that showcase the NHS\u2019 achievements and debate its future.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The NHS: A People\u2019s History<\/h2>\n<p>One of these programmes is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/tv-radio-events\/tv\/nhs-peoples-history?episode=21199\">The NHS: A People\u2019s History<\/a>, a three-part series on\u00a0BBC Four,\u00a0starting at\u00a09pm on Monday 2 July.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9319 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/birthday-cake-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"NHS at 70\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/birthday-cake-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/birthday-cake-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/birthday-cake-768x431.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/birthday-cake.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Presented by Alex Brooker, the series tells the story of the NHS from its birth in 1948 to the present day, through the incredible people who work there, and the British public whose lives are in their hands. Patients and staff from all over the country share their treasured mementoes and tell their personal stories. This uncovers a 70-year history that paints a vivid, nostalgic and at times conflicted portrait of modern Britain.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>OU\u2019s award-winning history of nursing expert on production team<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_9463\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9463\" id=\"longdesc-return-9463\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9463\" tabindex=\"-1\" src=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/RCN-Award-of-Merit-2018-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Claire Chatterton receiving her award at RCN Congress\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/ounews.co?longdesc=9463&amp;referrer=9460\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Claire receiving her Award of Merit at the RCN Congress in May 2018<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wels.open.ac.uk\/people\/csc97#tab1\">Claire Chatterton<\/a>, the OU\u2019s Staff Tutor in Health, Wellbeing and Social Care, played a key role in shaping the series. She recently received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\/get-involved\/rcn-awards\/rcn-award-of-merit\">Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Award of Merit<\/a> for her sterling services to nursing and was commended for her exceptional contribution to the RCN and the international recognition she has for her nursing history expertise. As a result, Claire now joins the RCN Award of Merit Roll of Honour, alongside the great and the good of the nursing world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really enjoyed being involved in this exciting programme, which tells the story of the NHS\u2019 70 years through the eyes of those working within it and those whose lives are or have been shaped by it as patients and relatives,\u201d explains Claire. \u201cIt uses fascinating objects, personal stories and contemporary news footage to tell this story in an accessible and compelling way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NHS\u2019 70<sup>th<\/sup> birthday is such an important occasion to mark, and I am delighted to be involved in doing that with this series,\u201d she continues.<\/p>\n<p>Claire is really proud of her NHS roots. \u201cI am so proud to have trained as a nurse in the NHS and to have worked in it for many years,\u201d she says. \u201cIt is a much loved British institution but is under huge pressures. Its 70<sup>th<\/sup> birthday is a time to reflect on this wonderful organisation, how it came to be and how it has changed and evolved over the years.
