Culture Secretary, Matt Hancock, admires headteachers who<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2018\/06\/19\/schools-must-play-part-protecting-children-digital-age\/\"> ban the use of mobile phones<\/a> and the Chief Ofsted Inspector is reported as thinking that the place of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/education-44553705\">mobile phones in classrooms is dubious at best<\/a>. Professor of Education (Futures) for the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education, and Language Studies (WELS), <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeterT\">Peter Twining<\/a>, provides his top five reasons mobile phones should not be banned in schools.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_9635\" style=\"width: 190px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9635\" id=\"longdesc-return-9635\" class=\"wp-image-9635 \" tabindex=\"-1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Professor-Peter-Twining-e1531496753705-400x600.jpeg\" alt=\"Professor of Education (Futures), Peter Twining\" width=\"180\" height=\"270\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/ounews.co?longdesc=9635&amp;referrer=9619\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9635\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Professor of Education (Futures), Peter Twining<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<h2>1. They are not just phones<\/h2>\n<p>Mobile phones are NOT just phones. They provide pupils with electronic dictionaries, magazines, maps, novels reference books, and scientific and musical instruments through applications. Headteachers should not dream of banning these from the learning environment.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Cheap technology for the masses<\/h2>\n<p>Most schools can\u2019t afford all of the technology that they need. It seems counterproductive to ban the use of the computers that children have in their pockets \u2013 bearing in mind that today\u2019s mobile phones are considerably more powerful than computers were only a few years ago.<\/p>\n<h2>3. &#8220;Banning mobiles phones will not stop them being used&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Banning them will not stop them being used \u2013 it will simply push that use underground. Much better for the device to be visible on the desk than hidden under it. This way, teachers will know if the mobiles are being used outside of learning.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Preparing young people for the modern world<\/h2>\n<p>Schools have a duty to prepare young people to live in the world outside the learning environment. Mobile phones are an integral part of life and schools should be helping young people make appropriate and effective use of them.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Connecting with young people through what they consider important<\/h2>\n<p>We know that learning only happens when the learner is interested i,n or at the very least sees the relevance of, whatever they are meant to be learning. Neuroscientist, Mary Immordino-Yang, states that: \u201cIt is literally neurobiologically impossible to think deeply about things that you don\u2019t care about\u201d. If we genuinely want pupils to learn in school then we need to connect with the things they think are important \u2013 and mobile phones certainly fit that bill!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Obviously, I am not advocating a free for all with mobile phones being used in ways that undermine effective learning. Clearly their introduction needs to be carefully prepared for and aligned with our appropriate educational aims. Of course that is more difficult than simply banning them, but it is also the right thing to do educationally.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeterT\">Professor of Education (Futures), Peter Twining<\/a>,\u00a0is passionate about developing education systems that are fit for our rapidly changing world.
