{"id":1080,"date":"2018-11-09T14:57:02","date_gmt":"2018-11-09T14:57:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/opentel\/?p=1080"},"modified":"2019-02-15T16:42:00","modified_gmt":"2019-02-15T16:42:00","slug":"lti-series-ai-the-ou-the-opportunity-the-reality-the-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/opentel\/lti-series-ai-the-ou-the-opportunity-the-reality-the-risks\/","title":{"rendered":"LTI Series &#8211; AI &#038; the OU: the opportunity, the reality &#038; the risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artificial Intelligence (AI) seems to be never out of the news \u2013 with Google\u2019s Deep Mind diagnosing diabetic eye disease better than ophthalmologists, self-driving vehicles avoiding or causing accidents, and automation threatening to take over everyone\u2019s jobs.Artificial Intelligence has also quietly entered the Open University.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to be aware that \u2018intelligent\u2019, \u2018adaptive\u2019 and \u2018personalised\u2019 AI in Education (AIED) systems are increasingly being deployed in universities around the world. In fact, companies as influential as Amazon, Facebook, and Google are currently investing millions of dollars developing AIED products, and, by 2020, AIED is predicted to become a market worth almost \u00a31 billion. Meanwhile, at the OU, there are at least six AIED projects currently in development.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this LTI Series seminar,\u00a0<b><strong>Wayne Holmes<\/strong><\/b>, will introduce Artificial Intelligence in education, what it is and how it works.
