Participatory approaches such as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Participatory Action Research (PAR)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0seek to improve social practice through a reflexive process of planning, implementing, observing and reflecting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(McTaggart, 1989)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and maintaining equity and openness between participants and researchers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">When social distancing needs to be maintained\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0travel to fieldwork sites becomes disrupted due to lockdown measures, how can we ensure the equity and openness of participatory approaches are maintained? Furthermore, how can we support participants, especially those in developing countries which may still be experiencing the negative effects of lockdown, through what is, arguably, one of the most stressful global events in recent history? And how can equal-power relationships be maintained between researchers and participants if they are geographically dispersed, sometimes in dramatically different social and economic climates?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Institute of Educational Technology (IET)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0has been\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">examining how these<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0challenges may be addressed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">by undertaking a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0literature review detailing how participatory research is being adapted to a distanced context\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in light of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Covid-19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and future pandemics<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. While still an emerging field, the review revealed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a number of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0key findings such as:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unique<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Ethical Implications<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A main challenge for conducting participatory research during pandemic health crises is the implications of engaging participants in research during a highly stressful and uncertain time\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Lupton, 2020a)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">For example, it may be likely that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0participants<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0normal routines are disrupted, and they may be experiencing negative effects associated with lockdown such as social isolation and frustration.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Furthermore, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hen research involves marginalised and vulnerable groups, there is the question of whether the researcher can be truly immersed in the research context if they are sitting comfortably at home, while participants may be living in highly chaotic environments<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0still suffering from the pandemic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Ruppel, 2020)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and whether this may put the equity the research is built upon at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">risk.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In such instances, it may be wise to ask whether the research could be postponed until more normal circumstances resume, however, for time-sensitive topics this may not be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a possibility<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Witt &amp; Schnabel, 2020)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Closure of Venues for Network Access<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Participant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in marginalised and rural communities may be reliant on venues such as internet cafes for their network access.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lockdown restrictions in many countries may result in the closure or reduced opening hours of these establishments and, as a result, taking part in participatory research from a distance, or engaging in online learning activities, may become a significant challenge for many participants\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Dube, 2020)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In such instances, researchers could consider using<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lower-tech asynchronous<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\/or analogue<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0methods.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alternatively, community led\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">device buy-ins and deals with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0data providers could provide cheaper network access<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">participants\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">home<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Buckler et al., 2020)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Research\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">N<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">ative to Covid-19<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The majority of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0empirical studies\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">identified in the literature review<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0adaptations of existing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">participatory\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">research. As such, the transition to a distanced context may have been easier due to pre-existing rapport and trust between researchers and participants. This poses the question of whether the true nature of participatory research can be established and maintained in research<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0projects<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0native to the pandemic context.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The effects of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Covid-19 are still being felt and the length of time until circumstances return to normality is uncertain.
