We also discussed progress with the core mission of the OU&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?page_id=173\"target=\"_blank\">Public Engagement with Research Catalyst<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>You can see the results of our discussion in the video below. In effect, this helps us to coalesce engaged research work at the OU around a shared purpose, connecting this purpose with the RCUK <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcuk.ac.uk\/pe\/concordat\/\"target=\"_blank\">Concordat for Engaging the Public with Research<\/a>, the work of the other seven <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicengagement.ac.uk\/about\/catalyst-projects\"target=\"_blank\">Public Engagement with Research Catalysts<\/a>, and with the national body for supporting work on this nature, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicengagement.ac.uk\/about\"target=\"_blank\">NCCPE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our commitment to this UK manifesto for public engagement, and to engaging publics more specifically with Open University research, is encapsulated in the following quote from our Vice-Chancellor, Martin Bean:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2556\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?attachment_id=2556\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2556\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MB.jpg\" alt=\"Martin Bean, Vice-Chancellor, The Open University\" title=\"Martin Bean, Vice-Chancellor, The Open University\" width=\"198\" height=\"178\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MB.jpg 198w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/MB-150x134.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2556\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martin Bean, Vice-Chancellor, The Open University<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are delighted to become a signatory to the NCCPE\u2019s Manifesto for Public Engagement. We are undergoing a process of organisational change, led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/main\/admin-and-governance\/executive-team\/pro-vice-chancellor-research-and-scholarship\"target=\"_blank\">Professor Tim Blackman<\/a>, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research, Scholarship and Quality), supported by an RCUK-funded, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?page_id=508\"target=\"_blank\">cross-Faculty team of researchers<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>Adopting an action research approach we aim to embed public engagement with research within The Open University\u2019s strategic planning for research and the operational practices of researchers at all levels.  In other words, we are working with researchers, research managers and senior executives to create the conditions where engaging research can flourish, and where excellence in these activities is recognised and rewarded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Framing organisational change<\/strong><br \/>\nA technique developed by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicengagement.ac.uk\/about\"target=\"_blank\">NCCPE<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicengagement.ac.uk\/about\/beacons\"target=\"_blank\">Beacons for Public Engagement<\/a>, and known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicengagement.ac.uk\/support\/self-assess\"target=\"_blank\">\u2018EDGE Tool\u2019<\/a>, provides a set of prompts that shapes and frames our programme of organisational change.  (EDGE is an acronym that stands for Embryonic, Developing, Gripping and Embedding.)<\/p>\n<p>We have used the EDGE Tool to assess the university\u2019s support for public engagement with research in relation to nine categories: leadership; mission; communication; support; learning; recognition; staff; students; and publics.  And we are now working with Faculties to help them to assess their approaches to engaged research using the EDGE tool.<\/p>\n<p>Together, these assessments, combined with research to explore how academics plan, enact and assess public engagement with research, are informing the development of action plans with aims and objectives that relate to each of the categories from this tool.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aims and objectives<\/strong><br \/>\nThrough the PER Catalyst programme of organisational change, we are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>exploring the roles and responsibilities that different academic domains value in providing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?p=246\"target=\"_blank\">leadership<\/a> for public engagement with research<\/li>\n<li>supporting discussions to develop a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicengagement.ac.uk\/what\"target=\"_blank\">shared understanding<\/a> of public engagement with research as it applies in different research domains<\/li>\n<li>implementing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?page_id=1621\"target=\"_blank\">awards scheme<\/a>, recognising researchers for excellence in engaging publics with research<\/li>\n<li>investigating the requirements and support mechanisms that can facilitate effective digital engagement with research<\/li>\n<li>exploring how researchers plan, enact and evaluate their public engagement with research work, with the aim of creating engaged communities of reflective practice<\/li>\n<div id=\"attachment_2669\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?attachment_id=2669\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2669\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2669\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Capture-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"The homepage of Participation Now\" title=\"Participation Now: http:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/society\/politics-policy-people\/participation-now\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Capture-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Capture-150x114.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Capture.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participation Now<\/p><\/div>\n<li>building on existing work in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/research\/main\/research-careers\"target=\"_blank\">career development and doctoral training programmes<\/a> for researchers and postgraduate research students <\/li>\n<li>issuing calls to researchers for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?page_id=1675\"target=\"_blank\">seed funded projects<\/a> on public engagement with research, providing a network of support<\/li>\n<li>offering structured opportunities for publics, students, user communities and other stakeholders, e.g. through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/society\/politics-policy-people\/participation-now\"target=\"_blank\">Participation Now<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?page_id=187\n\"target=\"_blank\">Engaging Opportunities<\/a>, to engage with OU researchers and research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leadership; Mission; Communication Champion\u2019s blog; star date 2014.03.10 (in effect, an update on the first post on this blog, &#8216;An open research university&#8216;).
