Technology) to create a workshop for the Open University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/teaching-and-learning\/esteem\/events\/the-3rd-esteem-annual-conference-0\" target=\"_blank\">3rd Annual eSTEeM Conference<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>Helen and I work in complementary areas: Helen in enhancing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/teaching-and-learning\/esteem\/projects\/themes\/engagement\/enhancing-professional-networking-and-engagement-using-social-media\" target=\"_blank\">professional networking and engagement<\/a> by exploring the activities of academics using social media; and me, as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?page_id=173\" target=\"_blank\">Public Engagement with Research (PER) Catalyst<\/a>, exploring researchers\u2019 understanding of engaged research and how it is mediated through digital technologies. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3164\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Playing-snakes-ladders.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Playing-snakes-ladders-150x112.jpg\" alt=\"The snakes and ladders of social media\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-3164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Playing-snakes-ladders-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Playing-snakes-ladders-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Playing-snakes-ladders-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The initial workshop at the eSTEeM workshop<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bringing together the two strands of our research through the eSTEeM workshop, Helen and I encouraged participants to think about how they currently use digital media professionally, how they could use digital media to support their role and what support they would need to realise their goals for digital engagement.<\/p>\n<p>To encourage discussion, we adapted the format of a board game and created the first prototype of \u2018the snakes and ladders of social media\u2019.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3167\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Barriers-and-motivations.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3167\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Barriers-and-motivations-300x279.jpg\" alt=\"Barriers and motivations\" width=\"270\" height=\"255\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3167\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The first version of the board: barriers and motivations<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/?p=5265\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed the workshop<\/a> in a post for the OU\u2019s Engaging Research blog.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, the game was played in three stages; a fourth was added following feedback from players.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stage 1: Working in groups of four, players move up the board by discussing their responses to statements about what they did (or didn\u2019t) do with digital media.  All the statements came directly from interview and survey data in Ann and Helen\u2019s respective research projects, e.g.: \u201cI follow people on Twitter if I think they will be useful for my work\u201d (move up 15); \u201cI\u2019ve uploaded my publications to a repository and I\u2019m pretty good at keeping them up to date\u201d (move up 8).\n<\/li>\n<li>Stage 2: Players decide on the barriers (snakes) and motivations (ladders) they perceive to be significant in relation to their professional (not personal) use of social media.  These are written on the snakes and ladders, and added to the game.<\/li>\n<li>Stage 3: Players collate and summarise the suggestions from Stage 2.  (In the early iterations of the game we passed these suggestions on to the OU\u2019s Communication team to inform their advice and guidance for researchers.)\n<\/li>\n<li>Stage 4: In response to feedback on the prototype, we created a closing activity to prompt researchers to consider what \u2019winning\u2019 would look like.  The design now includes take-away cards so players can identify a personal barrier that they want to overcome and an activity they can put into practice. Poster design: Peter Devine<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We found that the intimacy and well-understood etiquette of a board game \u2013 taking turns, moving forward, conversation \u2013 promoted relaxed and rich discussion, and it became clear the game had potential to be used beyond one workshop.  <\/p>\n<p>The game has since been used and refined in a variety of contexts and with researchers from post-graduates to professors. Photo: Gareth Davies.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Following feedback on these workshops another prototype was tested by researchers from the OU\u2019s Science Faculty over coffee in their common room.  The game has also been used in workshops for postgraduate researchers studying within the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/generic\/centa\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">NERC-funded CENTA<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chase.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">AHRC-funded CHASE<\/a> Doctoral Training Programmes, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The success of these workshops led us to explore the potential to produce the game for sharing more widely across the HE sector.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Designing the board game<\/strong><br \/>\nWe have worked with a graphic designer, Peter Devine (IET) and Richard Holliman (Science), to develop a traditional boxed board game.
