Credit: Jane Perrone.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhat have the Romans ever done for us?\u201d  John Cleese\u2019s famous line from Monty Python\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0079470\/\" target=\"_blank\">Life of Brian<\/a> is a question that has resonated with me over the last couple of weeks.  <\/p>\n<p>Back came the answer, \u201cThe aqueduct.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, yeah, yeah.  They did give us that.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there\u2019s sanitation&#8230;\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>You get the picture.<\/p>\n<p>Why, you may ask, is Monty Python featuring on the Open University&#8217;s Engaging Research blog?  You can thank the House of Commons Select Committee on Science and Technology.  They recently called for evidence to be submitted to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/science-and-technology-committee\/inquiries\/parliament-2015\/science-communication-inquiry-15-16\/\" target=\"_blank\">inquiry into science communication<\/a>.  In effect, they asked \u201cWhat has science communication ever done for us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6965\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aqueduct.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6965\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aqueduct.jpg\" alt=\"A Roman aqueduct.\" width=\"299\" height=\"199\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aqueduct.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/aqueduct-150x99.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Roman aqueduct.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the past week I\u2019ve worked with colleagues from three organisations to respond to this call for evidence: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.assist-uk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">AsSIST-UK<\/a> the UK national professional association for social studies of science and technology; the UK-based research network, <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceinpublic.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Science in Public<\/a>; and the international Public Communication of Science and Technology Network (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcst.co\/\" target=\"_blank\">PCST<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>By selecting the following links, you can read:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/hoc-science-comms-enquiry_assist-uk_sip_pcst.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">joint submission we made to the Select Committee Inquiry<\/a>, which was written by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/artshums\/depts\/history\/people\/staff\/academic\/Cassidya\/cassidya.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Angela Cassidy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffield.ac.uk\/politics\/people\/academic\/james-wilsdon\" target=\"_blank\">James Wilsdon<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/pcst.co\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Trench<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/rmh47\" target=\"_blank\">me<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<li>A post I wrote about the joint submission for the Guardian Science Policy blog, which explores <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/political-science\/2016\/may\/10\/what-has-science-communication-ever-done-for-us\" target=\"_blank\">what science communication (and engagement) have done for us<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ultimately, I\u2019d argue that science communication research and practice has sought to move us towards a more pluralistic research culture where different stakeholders have a say in how priorities are framed, how research is practiced and governed, and how the findings from research are shared.  This process of <a href=\"http:\/\/oro.open.ac.uk\/44255\/\" target=\"_blank\">culture change<\/a> is far from complete.  It requires leadership, courage, vision from the top down to the bottom up.
