Credit: Michael Francis.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I\u2019ve recently agreed to take on a new role at the Open University (OU) as the Academic Lead for Engaged Research. I\u2019ll be based in the OU\u2019s Research and Academic Strategy (RAS) Unit for half of my time from 1st August 2017.<\/p>\n<p>A key objective for my work in this new role will be to align the principles and practices of engaged research with the OU\u2019s recently-approved Academic Strategy for External Engagement, in particular addressing the following aim:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe will create new knowledge through research, scholarship and professional practice that meets the needs of external stakeholders and extends the reach and impact of our research on society, culture, economy and governments across the UK and internationally.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Through this work, the OU will also fulfil its commitment to the RCUK <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcuk.ac.uk\/pe\/Concordat\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Concordat for Engaging the Public with Research<\/em><\/a>, and the NCCPE <em>Manifesto for Public Engagement<\/em> (of which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicengagement.ac.uk\/support-it\/manifesto-public-engagement\/signatories\/open-university\" target=\"_blank\">OU is a signatory<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Building on success<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6045\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6045\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Cover-image1-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"An open research university (Holliman et al. 2015). Image: Beck Pitt.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The new role will build on the learning gained from three recent projects:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tThe RCUK-funded Public Engagement with Research (PER) Catalyst, <em>An Open Research University<\/em>, ran as one of eight culture change initiatives based in UK universities to identify, share and embed state-of-the art principles and practices of engaged research (<a href=\"http:\/\/oro.open.ac.uk\/44255\" target=\"_blank\">Holliman et al., 2015<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/oro.open.ac.uk\/46686\" target=\"_blank\">Grand et al., 2016<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/oro.open.ac.uk\/43126\" target=\"_blank\">2015<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\t<em>Engaging Opportunities<\/em> ran as one of 12 national structured and strategic partnerships, funded by RCUK through the School-University Partnership Initiative (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcuk.ac.uk\/documents\/documents\/rcukschool-universitypartnershipsinitiative-pdf\" target=\"_blank\">SUPI<\/a>). Over four years (2013-2016) the OU and the Denbigh Teaching School Alliance (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.denbighteachingschoolalliance.net\" target=\"_blank\">DTSA<\/a>) worked collaboratively to deliver engagement activities to raise aspirations and improve the life-chances for more than 6,500 people from across Milton Keynes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SUPI_Final_Report_Submitted_30-03-17.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Holliman et al., 2017a<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Holliman_et_al_Labcast_evaluation_in-press.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2017b<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/oro.open.ac.uk\/44415\" target=\"_blank\">Holliman and Davies, 2015<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\tThrough the <em>Developing productive partnerships with end-users project<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/stem.open.ac.uk\/people\/cw6522\" target=\"_blank\">Clare Warren<\/a> and I worked with colleagues to support postgraduate researchers through a training programme that covered skills and competencies in engagement and communication (<a href=\"http:\/\/oro.open.ac.uk\/48223\" target=\"_blank\">Holliman and Warren, 2017<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7468\" style=\"width: 861px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7468\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Group_photo.jpg\" alt=\"One of the training workshops, conducted in 2017. To this end, I contributed to a workshop to develop a vision and mission for UKRI public engagement, an assessment of public engagement within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicengagement.ac.uk\/news\/role-public-engagement-ref\" target=\"_blank\">REF 2014<\/a>, and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicengagement.ac.uk\/blog\/assessing-excellence-research-impact\" target=\"_blank\">REF 2021 Consultation<\/a> that was recently coordinated by HEFCE.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking forwards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m looking forward to working with colleagues in RAS, and research leaders, researchers and research support staff from across the University to support REF impact preparations across Units of Assessment, leading and\/or advising bids for external funding for engaged research and public engagement, and helping position the OU as a leader in engaged research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>References<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Grand, A., Holliman, R., Collins, T. and Adams, A.
