Really big. You just won&#8217;t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly, big it is\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/research-groups\/astrobiology\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AstrobiologyOU<\/a>, the research group that I\u2019m part of, it\u2019s not enough to study life on Earth and in space. <\/p>\n<p>Not enough to look here and on other planets and their moons for evidence that life exists or might have existed.<\/p>\n<p>Nor even enough to explore the environments that support, could support or might once have supported life on Earth or elsewhere in the Universe. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>If you would like to know more about the work of AstrobiologyOU and the people who are doing it, please explore the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/across-the-sciences\/astrobiology-on-openlearn\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Astrobiology Collection<\/a> or visit the AstrobiologyOU <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/research-groups\/astrobiology\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_8394\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Capture-1024x360.jpg\" alt=\"The AstrobiologyOU Logo\" width=\"625\" height=\"220\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Capture-1024x360.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Capture-150x53.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Capture-300x106.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Capture-768x270.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Capture-624x220.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/per\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Capture.jpg 1816w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8394\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The AstrobiologyOU Logo<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>AstrobiologyOU also aims to address the commercial, governance, educational and ethical challenges of astrobiology research and the ways communities around the world can engage with and apply astrobiology research.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge was to find a way to share the range of AstrobiologyOU\u2019s work with as many people as possible. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenLearn<\/a>, the Open University\u2019s gateway to thousands of free and openly available learning resources, numbers its visitors in the millions, so it seemed like a good place to start. <\/p>\n<p>However, OpenLearn is designed as a place for learning, not for showcasing, so I had to find a way to work within the framing that OpenLearn allowed. <\/p>\n<p>When I searched OpenLearn for \u2018astrobiology\u2019 in early 2020, it unearthed just a few articles, some of which were quite old, so I proposed creating a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/across-the-sciences\/astrobiology-on-openlearn\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Astrobiology Collection<\/a> of linked articles that would reflect the many facets of astrobiology as we embrace it in AstrobiologyOU and make the work of our researchers available to a potentially huge audience.<\/p>\n<p>Sure that OpenLearn must hold more astrobiology-related material, I used a range of other search terms (such as \u2018planets\u2019, \u2018icy moons\u2019, \u2018Mars\u2019, \u2018space\u2019) to find potentially relevant material, then worked with colleagues to review the articles that emerged. From these, we selected twelve that formed the nucleus of the new Collection. <\/p>\n<p>But this still left gaps in the content and I had to decide on the best way to fill them. Interviews \u2013 a tool I often use in my work \u2013 offer direct access to people\u2019s insights and understanding and allow them to describe their experiences in their own terms. Through interviews, I have explored the work of colleagues, from PhD students to academics to support staff, across AstrobiologyOU. There\u2019s also interactive content, like this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/science\/physics-and-astronomy\/astronomy\/explore-mars-interactive\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exploration of Mars<\/a>, and short courses, like this one on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/moons-our-solar-system\/content-section-overview?active-tab=description-tab\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moons of the Solar System<\/a>. Altogether, we\u2019ve almost doubled the size of the Collection and we\u2019re continuing to build \u2013 as I\u2019m writing this, there are three new articles in the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>The important thing about building any collection, of course, is that it stays together. The OpenLearn creative team helped set up the Collection and supports us as it expands. A collection must also be easy to explore and help its visitors to engage with ideas. Some visitors come in knowing what they\u2019re looking for, while others are content to browse until they spot something that looks interesting. <\/p>\n<p>To help visitors discover our material, we make sure each resource is tagged with labels that describe its content. So if \u2013 for example \u2013 a visitor types \u2018international development\u2019 into the OpenLearn search box, they will (eventually!) land on an article about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/astronomy\/astrobiology-the-ground\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intersections between international development and astrobiology<\/a>, which they might not have expected. <\/p>\n<p>From there, they could wander to an article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/astronomy\/what-can-earth-tell-us-about-mars\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what Earth can tell us about Mars<\/a>, a short course on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/microgravity-living-on-the-international-space-station\/content-section-overview?active-tab=description-tab\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">microgravity <\/a>or information about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/courses\/science\/degrees\/bsc-natural-sciences-q64\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studying with the Open University<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>So, to accurately quote Douglas Adams, \u2018Don\u2019t Panic!\u2019 Learning is meant to be a journey of discovery and surprise.
