{"id":1929,"date":"2025-05-22T09:38:31","date_gmt":"2025-05-22T09:38:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/religious-studies\/?p=1929"},"modified":"2025-05-22T09:38:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T09:38:31","slug":"filmmaking-and-lego-workshop-exploring-creative-pedagogies-for-promoting-religious-tolerance-and-diversity-in-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/religious-studies\/?p=1929","title":{"rendered":"Filmmaking and Lego: Workshop exploring creative pedagogies for promoting religious tolerance and diversity in schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the face of the recent upsurge of anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and other forms of prejudice, how can we support young people in building their resilience against hostile voices?<\/p>\n<p>The Open University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/religious-studies\/?page_id=1578\" >RETOPEA (\u2018Religious Toleration and Peace\u2019)<\/a> project team is collaborating with colleagues from the \u2018Understanding the Interplay: Worldviews, Education &amp; Lived Citizenship\u2019 project (Universities of London South Bank University and UCL) and\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hfleducation.org\/\" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/www.hfleducation.org');\">HFL Education<\/a> to offer a free joint workshop on the <strong>24<sup>th<\/sup> of June 2025 at Walton Hall in Milton Keynes<\/strong>. This\u00a0 will explore \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/religious-studies\/?p=1863\" ><strong>Creative pedagogies for promoting religious tolerance and diversity in schools<\/strong><\/a>\u2019, including the use of filmmaking and Lego.<\/p>\n<p>This workshop is aimed at head teachers and educational leaders in secondary education, further education and sixth forms as well as at teachers in history, film and media studies, or religious, worldviews and civic education. The workshop is offered free of charge, with financial support from the Culham St Gabriels Trust.<\/p>\n<p>The RETOPEA project aims to support young people\u2019s active learning about religious diversity in the past and present through the creative process of making short documentary-style films (\u2018docutubes\u2019).\u200b RETOPEA \u200bis an international project originally funded by the EU\u2019s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (2018-22; Grant Agreement no. 770309). Its educational methods and resources have been piloted across Europe with young people (aged 12-18). From 2023 onwards, further funding from the Culham St. Gabriel\u2019s Trust and The Open University\u2019s Open Societal Challenges programme has allowed the team to test and evaluate RETOPEA resources and methods more extensively in Jordan, Albania and the UK, and the team are currently also exploring their use in\u00a0primary and home education.<\/p>\n<p>The RETOPEA team have developed a free online course on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/history-the-arts\/religious-studies\/young-people-and-religion-creative-learning-history\/content-section-overview?active-tab=description-tab\" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/www.open.edu');\"><em>Young people\u00a0and religion: creative learning with history<\/em><\/a>, which is available on OpenLearn. This explains how teachers and youth workers can use the \u2018docutube method\u2019 in their own teaching.
