The group contains several researchers from the OU Sport and Fitness Research Cluster including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/njk84\" >Nichola Kentzer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/ch5997\" >Caroline Heaney<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/jp6933\" >Jess Pinchbeck<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/ho596\" >Helen Owton<\/a>, James Brighton and <a href=\"https:\/\/research.open.ac.uk\/people\/jkh255?nocache=67570700bbedb\" >Jo Horne<\/a>. The group researches a wide range of areas related to female participation in martial arts including warm-ups, uniform design, sports injury, and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Outputs from the group include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/epdf\/10.1007\/s41978-023-00140-2?sharing_token=FXmrMVVISkdAYZzSVLKL7_e4RwlQNchNByi7wbcMAY6BLKNBCwXvOUDCRriAzpDewN2Opgy28ezWD7CTUm-UPAU1L0BFx4wRC8FATsVvaPDJO--KUSru233CSqLAWWL3esgZlDR1t2p7iEP0UkbNZumpxKtMm85A6Pgke77SLr4%3D\" >The Influence of Gender Dynamics on Women\u2019s Experiences in Martial Arts: A Scoping Review<\/a><br \/>\nThis review of 53 studies highlighted that whilst martial arts environments can be positive spaces for women, the traditional hierarchies, patriarchy, gender norms, and problematic mixed-gender contact evident in such settings can be a barrier to women\u2019s participation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mas.cardiffuniversitypress.org\/articles\/193\/files\/668e1b87c25b1.pdf\" >MASS12: Evidence-Based Martial Arts Striking Sports Injury Prevention Programme<\/a><br \/>\nThis article introduces a prehabilitation programme comprising of 12 warm-up exercises designed to prevent common martial arts injuries in female participants and introduce more evidence-based practice into martial arts environments.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/better-martial-arts.org\/\" >Better Martial Arts and Combat Sports (BMACS)<\/a><br \/>\nThe BMACS website was created to disseminate the findings of the group to martial arts clubs and practitioners and ensure that the group\u2019s work has a positive impact on the martial arts community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In association with Oxford-Open-Cambridge Doctoral Training Partnership and British Taekwondo the group are currently advertising a fully funded PhD opportunity to explore women\u2019s experiences in martial arts.
