Indeed, to some degree the process of considering my practice and how it impacts others feels like a skill that is built-in to who I am \u2013 I am a deep thinker who considers what something might mean for me or someone else.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Problem: the risk of a tick-box approach to self-reflection using known theories<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Due to the familiarity of self-reflection, I was blas\u00e9 about what it would mean for myself as a researcher. The requirement didn\u2019t faze me; it all seemed routine because I have practised and taught it many times! <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/infed.org\/mobi\/donald-schon-learning-reflection-change\/\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">Donald Sch\u00f6n<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> talks about reflection \u2018in-action\u2019 and \u2018on-action\u2019, and reflection \u2018for-action\u2019 has been added more recently. I was happy to engage in this reflective process &#8211; before, during and after my research.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kolb\u2019s model provides a helpful reflective cycle which moves from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">concrete experience, reflective observation and abstract conceptualisation to active experimentation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/235701029_Experiential_Learning_Experience_As_The_Source_Of_Learning_And_Development\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Kolb 1984).<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Yet, often, students inaccurately apply this model to their practice; they aren\u2019t specific enough with the experience and then spill off in different directions, possibly because they have more to say than the confinements of this logical model. Neither practice nor research is neatly cyclical, and a more honest illustration of self-reflection might be a page of colourful scribble or a tangled ball of wool.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:60,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My preference is to use Gibbs\u2019 reflective model <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thoughtsmostlyaboutlearning.files.wordpress.com\/2015\/12\/learning-by-doing-graham-gibbs.pdf\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">(1998).<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Although still cyclical, it points explicitly to considering personal feelings as a discreet element, and it is accessible and straightforward: description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, and action plan. However, these approaches didn\u2019t inspire me. Therefore, in my methodology section, I felt I was simply responding to a requirement to cover these topic areas rather than investing in the process. That is until I found Peshkin\u2026<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Solution: an alternative approach to self-reflection<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Peshkin\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www-jstor-org.libezproxy.open.ac.uk\/stable\/pdf\/1174381.pdf?refreqid=fastly-default%3Af1689dfbedfd6d1457f817c6b30f2ac2&amp;ab_segments=&amp;origin=&amp;initiator=&amp;acceptTC=1\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">article<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is worth a read <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Peshkin 1988)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. He explains how he, as a researcher, could <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">personally<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> impact the research process and outcomes in different ways and moments. He documents his <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018subjectivity audit\u2019<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and coins the term <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018Subjective-I\u2019<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to describe how different elements of his \u2018self\u2019 impacted his research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.perlego.com\/book\/861690\/case-study-research-in-practice-pdf?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;campaignid=19806006398&amp;adgroupid=147253247415&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwhL6pBhDjARIsAGx8D5_hl8E7osBE5B28zEuNctZTG7iyJWQRuIhoEIPN8YA_m2XmzUlHGLAaAkwOEALw_wcB\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Simons 2009: 81).<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I allowed my self-reflection to be guided by Peshkin: to look for the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018warm and cool spots, the emergence of positive and negative feelings\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Peshkin 1988: 18) and to honestly connect with my personal qualities which may have the capacity to \u2018<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">filter, skew, shape, block, transform, construe and misconstrue what transpires from the outset of a research project to its culmination in a written statement\u2019 (Peshkin 1988: 17). <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This approach seemed simple and honest:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Embrace the gut reaction and follow the physical sensations to locate positive and negative feelings;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Consider what these feelings might mean for me as the researcher;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Consider what these subjective elements might mean for my research process, participants, and outcomes.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Solution: examples of Subjective-I\u2019s in practice<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Two articles assisted my understanding of Peshkin\u2019s approach to reflexivity, particularly as a practitioner-researcher. As a physiotherapist researcher, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/332786814_How_does_subjective_I_influence_a_qualitative_research_question_theoretical_approach_and_methodologies\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kalu<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> shares his \u2018multicultural-I\u2019, \u2018holistic-I\u2019 and \u2018professional-advocates-I\u2019 (Kalu 201). His <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web-s-ebscohost-com.libezproxy.open.ac.uk\/ehost\/pdfviewer\/pdfviewer?vid=0&amp;sid=0b054285-fafb-4452-8aae-0cb2dba6dd1d%40redis\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">article<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is helpful because he considers his research interest, theoretical approach and research question <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/332786814_How_does_subjective_I_influence_a_qualitative_research_question_theoretical_approach_and_methodologies\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Kalu 2019: 99).<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Secondly, Bradbury-Jones et al. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19832751\/\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">(2009)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> present a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary-wiley-com.libezproxy.open.ac.uk\/doi\/pdfdirect\/10.1111\/j.1365-2648.2009.05144.x%22HYPERLINK%20%22https:\/\/onlinelibrary-wiley-com.libezproxy.open.ac.uk\/doi\/pdfdirect\/10.1111\/j.1365-2648.2009.05144.x\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">collaborative study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> between lecturer and nursing students, providing excerpts from student reflective diaries which include illustrations explaining the \u2018angry-I\u2019, \u2018impatient-I\u2019, \u2018invisible-I\u2019 and \u2018passionate-I\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a practitioner-researcher planning to offer a series of workshops to social work students to introduce them to a self-help tool called Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), this new find appeared as a good fit for my developing research. It allowed me to own my feelings, and I soon had to start my own <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018subjectivity audit\u2019<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: \u2018overwhelmed-I\u2019, \u2018responsible-I\u2019, \u2018vulnerable-I\u2019, \u2018creative-I\u2019, \u2018collaborative-I\u2019. Rather than keep a reflective diary, I decided to chronicle my research journey using this audit tool, which I could add to as my research evolved.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Question<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: How important is it to align your method of self-reflection with your research topic area and your attributes as a researcher?
