Learn more about The Open University’s new Future Nurse programmes

Webinar presenters

The Open University ran a recent webinar which introduced The Open University’s new Future Nurse programmes, which start in Autumn 2020. The Open University has been providing nurse education for 17 years and is currently working in partnership with over 180 employers to develop the nurses of tomorrow. Many employers find the OU model more flexible than traditional nurse education – opening up a career in nursing to a wider talent pool. The webinar was led by Phil Kenmore, Head of Government, Health and Defence (Business Development) and Wendy Turner, Associate Head of School – Curriculum. Questions from attendees were answered live by Janet Webb, Associate Head of School, Professional Programmes and Angela Gill, Head of Business Development Government & Third Sector.

Our Future Nurse programmes prepare students for entry to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Register. Our nursing degrees and apprenticeships provide learners with the knowledge, skills and contemporary clinical practice which sets them up for their future careers as nurses or nursing associates. It’s a supported distance-learning programme that's been developed and run between The Open University and partner employers. We’re really pleased to be offering learning disability nursing and children’s and young people’s nursing from 2020, subject to validation in March 2020 with the NMC. This builds on our extensive experience of already educating and training nurses in adult and mental health nursing. Offering all four of those options which will be degree and degree apprenticeships and with flexible programme lengths, begins to open this up to a wider reach of students and employers.

Supported and facilitated distance learning programmes for the new NMC curriculum start in Autumn 2020 and are available in Adult, Child, Learning Disability or Mental Health Nursing (subject to NMC approval). The webinar also explained differences across the UK, the structure of the programmes on offer and information on how the learning is delivered. It concluded with answers to questions from employers which had been raised during the session.
