Often a PhD students first experience of seeing other people’s research is a presentation about the findings of a finished study which appears very neat and often very polished. At the Centre for Policing Research and Learning we are aware that the process of research while undertaking a PhD often feels a very long way away from that and in this mini-conference would like students to feel free to share their experiences of research as being messier and less polished, and (if relevant) to also share their experiences of applied research with its many challenges, frustrations and also opportunities.
We are looking for 10-15-minute presentations that can be quite wide ranging, either presenting a particular finding (if you wish) presenting the audience with suggestions as to a planned research programme, or simply sharing some of the literature in your planned research area in a way which makes clear why you have selected a particular approach and question/hypothesis. By doing this we hope that all students (regardless of how advanced their studies are) will be able to present something of interest to the audience, which will be the cohort of PhD students associated with the CPRL. The one point of commonality across all presentations should be the focus on one thing that you have learned that has emerged from your studies so far.
A talk will be given by Nela Smolovic-Jones who has recently completed her PhD.
