The Athena SWAN Charter was launched in 2005 by Advance HE to work with and recognise higher education institutes that helped advance the careers of women in STEM roles. The charter has since been expanded to cover gender equality more broadly, across all staff categories. By identifying barriers faced in the workplace and finding solutions to break these barriers down, Athena SWAN supports our strategic objective at the OU to promote a dynamic and inclusive culture.
As an Athena SWAN member, the OU is strongly committed to the career advancement and promotion of all staff. We're proud to have gained our first Athena SWAN Bronze Institutional Award in April 2013, and to achieve a bronze renewal in April 2016 and now 2021. The internationally recognised award acknowledges good practice in supporting gender equality and celebrates our inclusive culture.
