START: Analytical thinking for resilience

Whatever your job and whatever your sector, it is almost certain that you need to apply analytical thinking to complex issues and to tackle problems in an effective way. These are exciting skills to develop as they allow you to improve your impact, work more effectively with others, and make good use of the vast amounts of data now available - thanks to modern information technology. As you advance in your leadership career, you will increasingly find that the leader plays a key role in framing a problem and defining the questions to be asked in ways which maximise the chances of finding correct answers. It’s possible to waste a lot of time on irrelevant issues if you fail to invest in these crucial first steps.

In this course, we will explore some techniques for you to try. These include fishbone analysis, 5 Whys, the First Fifteen Steps, and Appreciative Inquiry. We will consistently encourage you to think about how you get beyond presenting symptoms and into the real issues that need to be resolved. We also stress the importance of collaborative working so that you benefit from the knowledge and wisdom of colleagues.

Unfortunately this course is temporarily unavailable. Please check back on Study at the OU in early 2023 when it will be back online
