Whatever your job and whatever your sector, you are almost certain – at some point – to have asked yourself why you do what you do, and how the purpose of your professional life aligns with your purpose as a human being. You may even have asked yourself that question and, as a result, decided to take a new and different route.
Few organisations would press ahead without a plan. Yet many of us fail to apply the same discipline to planning our own career trajectory: too often, we allow things to happen to us rather than us taking the time and trouble to reflect on who we are, what we do best, what skills and experience we want to develop, and where we are likely to find fulfilling and satisfying professional work.
As we confront the many global challenges with which we and future generations must grapple, it’s becoming evident that people increasingly seek purpose in their working lives. Not only that, but organisations based on a compelling purpose, and which live out their declared purpose in all that they do, are often the most successful. That sense of purpose speaks to many stakeholders: staff, customers, suppliers, neighbours and others.
In this course, therefore, we’re focussing on purposefulness. We start in the first unit with you and post questions which we hope will help you to distil your own purpose and how you can achieve it. Then we move to a different perspective and discuss organisational purpose, and how leaders help to articulate it and engage the wider team in that purpose. We use a case study to help bring the essence of purposefulness to life, before bringing all the threads together and offering some practical ways in which you can develop a healthy sense of purpose in your working life.
