Activity 11 - What happened when: learning disability timeline 1

Aim

To establish a timeline of events associated with institutions for people with learning disabilities.

Learning outcome(s)

Students have a chronology of events associated with institutionalisation. Students are able to relate the history of institutionalisation to contemporary events.

Time required

30 minutes

Resources

  1. Purple Patch animated timeline
  2. A4 printed copy of Activity 11/Resource 1 - People, Places and Events; 1 copy per group of 4-5 students
  3. Students will need to have viewed No Longer Shut Up in order to link the timeline to Mabel's life

Activity

  1. Show the animated timeline (it takes approximately 10 minutes).
  2. Spend five minutes checking understanding by reference to Mabel’s life (e.g. when did Mabel go into St Lawrence’s? When did she come out?).
  3. Then give the People Places and Events printouts to students and ask them to place them on the floor in chronological (date) order.
