In June, Development Policy and Practice celebrated its 30th anniversary with a packed one-day event, Opening Up Development: 30 Years of Development Policy and Practice. The event brought together more than 100 people from DPP's past and present, including academic collaborators, alumni and media producers, and culminated with the inaugural lecture of Professor Hazel Johnson.

Professor Tim Blackman, Pro Vice-Chancellor Research, Scholarship and Quality), opened the event by applauding the success of DPP so far. Some of the key achievements highlighted were:

  • the launch of the Third World Studies course in 1983, which contained the innovative Third World Atlas and combined critical social theory with a novel engagement with popular culture
  • the development, in 1997, of the Masters in Development Management, which has now been studied by more than 1000 students in over 100 countries
  • the creation of IKD, with colleagues from the Faculty of Social Sciences and OU Business School, in 2002
  • DPP's position as a global leader in the development of research around China and Africa, and the high-level advice it has thus been able to provide to the World Bank, African Union, South African government and African Development Bank.
