This project is analysing and testing a new data collection tool which has the potential to be of benefit in improving health systems research in African contexts.
Cristina Santos, Open University (Principal Investigator)
Maureen Mackintosh, Open University
This project is funded through The Open University’s internal top-up funding for the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF), as part of our work to support the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment.
The project arises from a larger project involving Dr Cristina Santos and Professor Maureen Mackintosh, Innovation for Cancer Care in Africa (ICCA).
As part of this project, an original framework for data collection and analysis of the pathways patients take through care was developed and adapted into a tool combining qualitative data collection and coding for quantitative analysis in an original format.
It became clear that this work has generated a methodological approach which has original features and is potentially of wider relevance than its initial application.
The Open University researchers are collaborating with Dr Mercy Karimi Njeru of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), an expert in mixed methods, to assess and develop the tool and share their knowledge among researchers in East Africa and the UK.
The project emerges from the GCRF-funded project Innovation for Cancer Care in Africa (ICCA).
