line 1: Dear Sir
line 2: Our Society is
line 3: called the Church of England
line 4: Society to promote
line 5: Xn Christian education in Syria.
line 6: I came to England in the year
line 7: 1838 & proposed to my friends the
line 8: importance of native agency
line 9: to do good in their land
line 10: by promoting Christianity
line 11: thr'ough Xn Christian education & in
line 12: that year the original
line 13: foundation of the societyPage 2
line 1: was formed. God has
line 2: blessed the efforts of
line 3: this infant society as
line 4: you will see from the
line 5: enclosed circular. The
line 6: society has 6 young
line 7: Syrians under instruction
line 8: in this country intended
line 9: to become native labourers
line 10: in Syria. Some as medical
line 11: men, some as surgeons
line 12: some as school masters
line 13: and some as ministers.
line 14: The society would havePage 3
line 1: had many other
line 2: Syrian youths but
line 3: want of funds compelled
line 4: them to limit their
line 5: operation. The society
line 6: being infant is not
line 7: yet well known. I hope
line 8: you will make it
line 9: well known through your
line 10: publication so that
line 11: they may have means
line 12: to support the young
line 13: Syrians under educationPage 4
line 1: & to support schools etc.
line 2: in that interesting but
line 3: afflicted country Syria.
line 4: In short the society’s
line 5: plan is to help that
line 6: kind by education
line 7: through native agency.
line 8: I long for its success naturally
line 9: for it pleased God to make
line 10: me an humble instrument
line 11: to its formation. It is a
line 12: work of love, a glorious object.
line 13: Most truly yours
