line 2: 27th July 1862
line 3: Dear Sir
line 4: I received your
line 5: kind letter yesterday and am
line 6: much obliged for your attention.
line 7: The price you name for casts of
line 8: the wood cuts will amount
line 9: to a great deal more than Mr.
line 10: Hachette and I thought they
line 11: would cost. I feel almost
line 12: afraid to go to that expense as
line 13: you know the uncertainty of
line 14: profits in selling Books in France.
line 15: I am anxious to have the book
line 16: made in that language and
line 17: these seems no other way, (The
line 18: translation being made) than
line 19: to get the casts in the way
line 20: mentioned. I am very poor &
line 21: you must make the best

line 1: arrangement for me that you
line 2: can perhaps something cheaper – and I hope you
line 3: will have them done, in the
line 4: time you mentioned – one week
line 5: or sooner if possible. And sent
line 6: carefully packed for the transport
line 7: to me. Care of Hachette – 14 Rue
line 8: Pierre Sarrazin, Paris,
line 9: where I shall be by the time of
line 10: their arrival.
line 11: The four little cuts which print
line 12: with the text need not be cost.
line 13: New cuts must be made for them.
line 14: There will then be 9 plates of one
line 15: size to be done.
line 16: "Sad – Sad-" you may well
line 17: say is the state of affairs in
line 18: America – and who but God knows
line 19: what is to be the end of it –
line 20: Who can separate them? It
line 21: is a family quarrel and
line 22: theymust & will, fight it out.

line 1: If compelled to separate, there
line 2: will be no end of it – they will
line 3: go right at it again. And
line 4: forever fight.
line 5: It has defeated
line 6: and almost discouraged all
line 7: my plans of returning to my
line 8: own Country with my recent
line 9: collections and my intended
line 10: publications, for which
line 11: I have been exhausting all
line 12: my strength and all my
line 13: earthly means but I
line 14: will work & hope on
line 15: thinking that kind and just
line 16: Promised land has yet something
line 17: in store for all who deserve
line 18: it.
line 19: Yours sincerely
line 20: George. Catlin
