line 3: My dear Sir,
line 4: Your parcel of books reached
line 5: me on Christmas morning; your letters
line 6: not being addressed to Dearman went
line 7: to Tarrytown and did not come to hand
line 8: until today.
line 9: My nieces join with me in thanking
line 10: you for the beautiful books you have sent
line 11: us and to you and Mrs Putnam your
line 12: wishes for a Merry Christmas and a
line 13: happy new year.
line 14: For my own especial part let me say
line 15: how sensibly I appreciate the kind

line 2: been fully counterbalanced on your part;
line 3: and I take pleasure in expressing the
line 4: great satisfaction I have derived, throughout
line 5: all our intercourse, from your amicable,
line 6: obliging and honourable conduct. Indeed
line 7: I never had dealings with any man,
line 8: whether in the way of business or friendship
line 9: more perfectly free from any alloys.
line 10: That these dealings have been profitable
line 11: is mainly owing to your own capacity and
line 12: enterprise. You had confidence in the continued
line 13: vitality of my writings when……………
line 14: ……………………………………………………….
line 15: ……………………………………………………….
line 16: had almost persuaded me they were defunct
line 17: You called them again into active existence
line 18: and gave them a circulation that I believe
line 19: has surprised even yourself. In rejoicing at

line 1: their success my satisfaction is doubly
line 2: enhanced by the idea that you share
line 3: in the benefits desired from it.
line 4: Wishing you that continued prosperity
line 5: in business, which your upright enterpris-
line 6: ing, trustful and liberal mode of
line 7: conducting it merits, and is calculated to
line 8: ensure; and again wishing for you and
line 9: Yours a happy New Year
line 10: I remain very truly & heartily
