line 1: North Park April 9th
line 2: Dear Sir
line 3: If you think the anonymous publication
line 4: of the little volume could stand in the way of its success
line 5: and as you have already announced it, I must
line 6: comply with your request, and allow my name to stand
line 7: on the title page. Will you be kind enough, however, to
line 8: print it in full, as signed to the preface.
line 9: I enclose another preface, and wish to recall the
line 10: former, perhaps you will be kind enough to return it
line 11: to me. The enclosed is shorter, simpler and perhaps
line 12: better for a little book of the kind. I shall take it as a
line 13: great favour if you will insert at the end of the volume
line 14: the enclosed announcement, of a work I am preparing
line 15: for publication. It will be a great service to me. I enclose also the verse
line 16: Yours very sincerely
line 17: H. R. St John
line 18: Sampson Low Senior
line 19: P.S. I see you have made havoc with my political expressions: the dissemination of
line 20: those opinions formed the main object of the volume. But the modification you introduced
line 21: conveys, in a less violent manner, the same meaning, and I am glad you altered it.
line 22: Pray however let the little correction I have made stand. I wish the volume could have
line 23: been published in Easter.
