New purchase - State Papers Online

The library has just licensed the Calendar of State Papers Online, a collection of original manuscripts of government from Henry VIII to the death of Queen Anne, following a period of trial access and analysis of demand within Arts and Humanities. Widely regarded as the single most important research resource in this area, this important collection will support department research in early modern history, early modern literature and book history, and complements the Library’s existing Early English Books Online primary source collection. It will support teaching of the planned replacement taught Masters degrees in English and History.

State Papers Online offers a complete working environment to study Early Modern Britain, giving access to original manuscript materials across government, from high level international politics and diplomacy to internal affairs. The correspondence, reports, memoranda, and parliamentary drafts from ambassadors, civil servants and administrators present a full picture of Tudor and Stuart Britain and its place in the Early Modern world, giving direct insight into the religious turmoil of the Tudor period, the execution of Charles I  and later restoration of monarchy.
