Celebrating Black History Month

We are celebrating Black History Month this year in a few different ways:

Remembering Stuart Hall - On October 13th a new featured item will be launched on the OU Digital Archive celebrating the life of Professor Stuart Hall (1932-2014). Professor Hall joined the OU in 1979 and was known as one of the leading theorists in the field of cultural studies – particularly regarding the concepts of race, identity and multiculturalism.

Black History Month resource list – We have gathered resources suggested by members of the Open University’s BAME Staff Network to promote in a new Black History Month resource list. The list includes videos, books, journal articles, databases and breadth of perspectives, serving as a great starting point for anyone wishing to learn more about Black history and experiences. Find more articles and free courses at OpenLearn's Black History Month collection.

Celebrating Black Poets - Check out our Facebook and Twitter pages where we will be highlighting Black poets in support of the OU’s poetry competition this month. We begin with OU honorary doctorate Benjamin Zephaniah and, what else, Library Ology

A few lines from his poem:

I have a date with Su Ling Lee

We’re meeting by the library

At 5 o’clock by history

Hear him read the poem at the Poetry Archive.
