Professional biography

Janet Hughes completed her PhD at the University of Dundee and has taught computing at all levels (secondary school, teacher training, undergraduate and postgraduate) for over thirty years.  Previously Janet held various posts in the University of Dundee, including Dean of the School of Computing and Head of Learning and Teaching in the College of Art, Science and Engineering. She was awarded a Personal Chair by the University of Dundee in 2014. She joined the Open University in 2016 and is based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Janet is a member of the BCS and a past member of the BCS academic accreditation committee. She was co-chair of Dundee's successful School of Computing Athena SWAN bronze award self-assessment team and is now a member of the School of Computing and Communications Athena SWAN self-assessment team in the Open University. 

Research interests

Janet's current research is in the general area of computer science education; particular interests are in agile software engineering, professional issues and work-based learning.

  • Leader of ACM CompEd working group on teaching of computing ethics

Janet is module team chair of T227, TXY227, TMXY125 and is on the module team of T122, TXY122, TMXY375 amd TMXY475.
