Professional biography

I joined the OU in 2021 as Staff Tutor in the School of Life, Health and Chemical Sciences and as a tutor on the module S112 Science: Concepts and Practice

Prior to the OU I was Professor of Chemistry Education and Director of Teaching at the University of Edinburgh. While at Edinburgh I led a large-scale change agenda in how we teach, assess, and develop appropriate graduate attributes of chemistry students.

I have a broad range of research and scholarly interests and supervise students in topics relating to learning in laboratories, transitions in education, supporting students’ independent learning and I am particularly interested in undergraduate research skills. Publications are available on my Google Scholar Page and a reasonably comprehensive list of presentations and seminars is available here. My Inaugural Lecture summarising a lot of the work I have been involved in over the last few years is available to view here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJqBA_e00OA.

I have been involved with the Royal Society of Chemistry in various guises, including as former Editor in Chief of Chemistry Education Research and Practice - a free to access journal for all teachers and researchers in chemistry education - and past Chair of the Editorial Boad of Education in Chemistry - a periodical for chemistry teachers. I was an elected member to the RSC Education Division Council, and have served as Honorary Secretary and Chair of Local Sections in Republic of Ireland and subsequently Edinburgh and SE Scotland.

I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a National Teaching Fellow.
