Profile summary

Professional biography

I was born and brought up in the United States and did my undergraduate work at George Mason University in northern Virginia. I came to the UK in the 1970s and did my MA and PhD at the University of York. I joined the English Department at the OU in 2002, after teaching at a number of English universities, including the University of Hull, the University of Manchester and the University of Hertfordshire.

Research interests

I am an early modern specialist with particular research interests in the Restoration. For the past few years my research has focused on the works of Aphra Behn, and I have written extensively on her plays and prose works, examining their relationship to contemporary political events, their gender politics, and the role of freethinking in her work. I am the author of William Shakespeare: Coriolanus in the Writers and Their Works series (Northcote House, 2007), the editor of A Companion to Early Modern Women’s Writing (Blackwell, 2002) and the co-editor (with John Stachniewski) of Grace Abounding with Other Spiritual Autobiographies (OUP, 1998).

Teaching interests

Since joining the OU, I have worked on numerous English Department modules. I designed and wrote the Level 1 short course A177 Shakespeare: An Introduction and produced a chapter on Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus for AA100 The Arts Past and Present. I chaired AA306 Shakespeare: Text and Performance for many years and co-authored (with David Johnson) a chapter on different versions of the Coriolanus story for the English MA. I chaired the Department’s flagship Level 2 module, A230 Reading and Studying Literature, in production and in its first two years of presentation. I also wrote three chapters of teaching material for A230 and co-edited (again with David Johnson) the first of three module books, The Renaissance and Long Eighteenth Century (co-published with Bloomsbury, 2012).
