Professional biography

Teaching Interests

I am at present a Senior Lecturer and Staff Tutor currently working in Social Policy and Criminology in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) since 2015.  My most recent contributions have been to the production of the new undergraduate and postgraduate Criminology curriculum, DD212 Understanding Criminology, and DD804 Crime and Global Justice, with a particular focus on the assessment and tuition strategies as well as the recruitment of tutors.

As a staff tutor of geographically dispersed part time distance learning tutors, I am responsible for the delivery of blended tuition and the use of diverse learning technologies to students. The role involves ensuring high standards of teaching quality, the organisation of professional staff development and the development of learning materials. 

I have been tutoring at The Open University since 1994 in a number of Social Sciences, Social Policy, Sociology and Criminology modules. This has included teaching modules for first, second and third year undergraduate students as well as Masters modules.  

I have also taught History modules at Sussex University and Birkbeck College.

Broadcasting and Free learning

I am the FASS Media Fellow (Social Sciences) seconded into Broadcast & Partnerships.  This entails working with academic staff, teams in Broadcast & Partnerships and Openlearn to develop media projects and open educational resources which align with the faculty’s strategic curriculum and teaching objectives. These in turn promote the FASS qualifications and modules as well as current research. 

I act as the central point of contact for the development, production and dissemination of public engagement activity, for the BBC, OpenLearn and third party platforms FutureLearn and YouTube).

Impact and Engagement

A founder member and current Chair of the Voluntary Action History Society which runs a seminar programme at the Institute of Historical Research and also triennial international conference

Previously a Trustee for Impetus, Brighton and Hove

Former Research Fellow at the Health and Social Policy Research Centre, the University of Brighton and Research Consultant, Sussex Consultancy Services.  These roles entailed the design and management of research; the presentation of complex and disparate information in a co-ordinated and succinct format; and the development of evaluative frameworks. 

Other

FASS Representative (Regional) to Senate. I bring my experience as an AL and Regional homeworker and understanding of FASS priorities, to contribute to debates and decision-making.

Social Sciences UCU Representative.  I use my knowledge and understanding of the problems and concerns of UCU members to inform discussions and consultation with senior management as well as OU Branch priorities.

Research interests

These stem in the main from my PhD on the social history of voluntary organisations as well as from my background working in the voluntary and community sectors, as a paid manager, campaigner and trustee over 20+ years and as a professional trainer in Charity Evaluation and a Charity Assessor for The King’s Fund 1997-2017.

·         the social history of voluntary action (both philanthropy and mutual aid), primarily in Britain in the 19th and 20th centuries

·         the role of women as social investigators in Britain in the early 20th century

·         archival research into voluntary action for unmarried mothers

·         voluntary organisations and associational democracy

·         the use of evaluation in voluntary organisations.

Member of the Harm Evidence Research Collaborative, Women’s History Network and Social History Society.
