I am an Organic Geochemist working within the fields of Biogeochemistry and Astrobiology.
I work on tracing the cycling of carbon during the Quaternary. I am particularly interested in the relative importance of terrestrial environments (e.g. wetlands) in driving atmospheric carbon concentrations, along with quantifying the influence microorganisms have as both sources and sinks of carbon to the atmosphere.
I develop reconstructions of past environmental change within both terrestrial and oceanic ecosystems. This research uses multiproxy and interdisciplinary approaches to create a holistic understanding of paleo-environmental change during the Quaternary.
Allied to this, I am also interested in how organic geochemical tools can be used to trace the existence of life on other planetary bodies. Using both laboratory simulations and analogue environments, I focus on how we can untangle abiotic and biotic signatures from post depositional processes.
I currently work in the Southern Ocean and in wetland and dryland environments of Africa.
