Profile summary

Professional biography

I began working for the Open University in November 2006.  I am an adult nurse by background and have worked in a wide variety of adult nursing settings across the UK and abroad.  I also have 20 years experience working in pre and post-registration nurse education.

As a Staff Tutor, Nursing and Health and Social Care in the OU in the East Midlands, my role has various strands.  I work with my Staff Tutor Nursing colleague, Rachael Chadwin, to co-ordinate the delivery of the Pre-Registration Nursing Programme across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Northamptonshire.  I currently have specific links with Northampton General Hospital, Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust, Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust and Kettering General Hospital and line manage the Module Tutors and Practice Tutors who deliver the programme within these four Trusts.

In 2014 I became Co-Qualification Director for the OU pre-registration nursing degree programmes in adult nursing and mental health nursing.  I have a particular interest in and responsibility for ensuring that the practice components of these degrees meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements and for quality assuring the programmes.

I am the lead for the Foundation Degree in Healthcare Practice within OU East Midlands.  I am also a member of the qualification team for the MSc in Advancing Professional Practice, contributing to the development and delivery of this postgraduate degree, which supports healthcare professionals to function as successful change agents, skills analysts and researcher or practice innovators in their particular fields of practice.

During 2014/15 I was a member of a small team of four nursing academics producing materials for our on-line Facilitating Learning in Practice Course (KG005), which is free to access on Open Learn and when successfully studied alongside KG006 Facilitating Learning in Practice: Portfolio Assessment Course, allows registered nurses to achieve NMC recognised mentor status.
