Professional biography

Julian originally studied maths at Cambridge University.  After leaving university he had a career in market research and marketing.  After retiring he studied for an MSc in psychology at Liverpool and is currently a PGR student at the OU doing a PhD on social psychology.

Research interests

Julian’s PhD is concerned with the impact of the internet on the Contact Hypothesis.  While the contact hypothesis is one of the most researched areas of social psychology, little work has been done on online contact, especially in a naturalistic setting.  His work investigates whether online contact follows the same ‘rules’ as face-to-face contact or whether there are differences that are specific to this new medium.
