Professional biography

Johanna is a full-time PhD student at IET.

Johanna’s research focuses creativity and learning in digital entertainment games. Using a mixed-method design comprising of semi-structured interviews, a narrative survey, a online questionnaire, reflexive photography and photo-elicitation interviews, the different forms of creative expression unique to digital games are illuminated, alongisde their propensity to aid in the development various learning outcomes and transferable compentencies. The outputs of the project involved the creation of a framework to aid educationalists in selecting games to develop specific creative forms and provides a guide for game designers seeking to implement affordances to support player creativity. Furthermore, the development of the Creativity in Gaming Scale (CGS) provides a metric to operationalize and assess creativity from a digital game's perspective.

Johanna received her MA in Sociology and her MRes in Social Research Methods at the University of Aberdeen where she examined gamer sub-culture within Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games using an ethnographic approach. She further went on to look at flow experiences across different game mediums; both non-digital games, sports and digital games. To further her interest in technology she completed a MSc in Software Technology and Network Management at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, where her software project involved designing and implementing a graphical steganography application using Least Significant Bit (LSB) and whitespace algorithms.
