Values for Impactful SoTL

Values are standards of behaviour that inform the way people interact. By signifying what is desirable or appropriate, values guide our choice of action. From synthesising the evidence collated for the impact evaluation initiative, we have identified six values which drive SoTL practice and facilitate impact. These values are being: curious, open-minded, ethical, strategic, empathetic and generous.

Being curious icon

Being curious implies being perceptive in identifying areas of learning and teaching that could be improved and enhanced. Being curious also means keeping oneself aware of the SoTL literature and engaging with the SoTL community to learn about and adopt the educational practices of others.

Being open-minded icon

Being open-minded implies realising that institutional processes and policies may not be changed easily. Therefore, SoTL practitioners should be open to being questioned about the findings of their SoTL initiatives.

Being ethical icon

Being ethical implies ethical considerations underpin the SoTL research, the dissemination of the findings, and the evidencing and reporting of impact.

Being strategic icon

Being strategic involves connecting the SoTL activity to larger, shared agendas for student learning and success, such as the Teaching and Learning plan, Student Experience plan, or Scholarship plan of the institution.

Being empathetic icon

Being empathetic refers to understanding the requirements and perspectives of the stakeholders, such as students, educators, developers, line managers, and policy makers.

Being generous icon

Being generous implies sharing SoTL practice with peers. Both internal and external dissemination enable peer review and evaluation by the community, which establishes a reciprocal sharing process that fosters impact.
