Recognising excellence at the eSTEeM Annual Conference

The 7th eSTEeM Annual Conference took place on the 25-26 April 2018.  Entitled STEM Futures: Delivering Excellence Through Scholarship and attended by over 180 delegates, the aim of the conference was to highlight the recent scholarship supported by eSTEeM and reflect on the future of STEM-specific teaching and learning in order to maximise the success of students in achieving their objectives and aspirations. Our biggest ever conference was further enhanced by the strong presence from associate lecturers and student representatives. 

On day two we ran a specialist interactive workshop which focused on the theme of ‘Digital by Design’ and the challenges and opportunities we face as STEM educators in open and distance learning within this context.

Carol Morris and Sally Organ with their winning posterDelegates were invited to vote for the best poster and congratulations go to Carol Morris and Sally Organ who won for their poster Women in Engineering at the Open University: motivations and aspirations.

This year’s conference also saw the launch of the inaugural eSTEeM Scholarship Projects of the Year Awards. Prizes were awarded for projects in two categories; Innovative/original approach to teaching and Enhancing the student experience.  Many congratulations go to following eSTEeM project teams –

Winner: Innovative/original approach to teaching – Karen Vines & Chris Hughes and team. Project title Sonification of depictions of numerical data 

Highly Commended: Innovative/original approach to teaching – Lisa Bowers and team. Project title – The ‘Touching Creativity’: a proof of concept project 

Winner: Enhancing the student experience – Carol Calvert and team. Project title – A Flexible Start to M140

Highly Commended: Enhancing the student experience – Ann Walshe & Anne-Marie Gallen and team. Project title – Perceptions, Expectations and Experience of Group Tuition: towards a shared understanding amongst stakeholders
