Investigation into running course specific taster tutorials within prisons for non-OU students

I am an AL in Maths and Engineering and have tutored in many prisons around the North of England. This has entailed visiting the prison education departments to see the relevant OU student. The visits to education usually involve being in a classroom with multiple prisoners not involved with the OU and covering other subjects due to the obvious limits on prison staff. This project intends to explore running module specific level one maths/engineering taster tutorial sessions for non OU students to supplement the material the education staff already have. Prisoners commonly feel like they wouldn’t have the ability to complete OU courses and this project would address this by showing them they could achieve great things. This will be run with support and in conjunction with the North SISE teams and hopefully involve joint visits. The outcomes will be measured on how many prisoners took the opportunity to embark on some form of study due to the visits. During initial exploratory phase it has come to light we have a number of successful prisons where OU numbers are high, some with varied involvement and a large number with no engagement at all. In view of this the project would aim to communicate with each type to showcase benefits of OU study in a safe non-committal environment.
