Diversity in Physics (Online Event)

Dates
Monday, November 22, 2021 - 19:00 to 20:30

Monday 22nd November, 7 to 8:30 pm (UK time)

The School of Physical Sciences is planning a series of online events showcasing diversity in physics and related subjects. We are inviting all students interested in these disciplines to our 2nd online evening event where we will hear about the work and experiences of two scientists who have experience in combining their physical sciences journey with caring responsibilities.

The evening will comprise two short talks about an area of work of the two scientists followed by a panel discussion on the speakers’ experiences and career trajectory. Please see the preliminary programme below.

Speakers

We are delighted to announce that Emily Lakdawalla and Karen Barton will join us for the evening.

Emily Lakdawalla is an extra-terrestrial geologist and among other topics – an expert on robotic planetary exploration. She has a passion for science communication and regularly speaks and writes for a wide variety of audiences. The excellence of her work has been recognised by many institutions; among other awards, she has received an honory doctorate from the Open University and has an asteroid named after her. For more information about Emily Lakdawalla, please visit: Emily Lakdawalla – Planetary scientist, science writer, public speaker, space crafter, asteroid 274860

Karen Barton worked in the Civil Service for 14 years before embarking on a career change in 2016. Since then she has had two children and is close to completing a BSc in Natural Sciences with the Open University, focusing on Physics, Astronomy and Planetary Science Modules. Karen currently works for a space laser startup company and lives in London with her wife and two daughters.
