When: Tuesday 11 May 2021, from 7.30pm

Where: Online Stadium - Berrill Lecture Theatre, The Open University, Milton Keynes, MK7 6AA

The InSight mission landed on Mars in November 2018 and placed SEIS, a seismometer with unprecedented sensitivity, onto the surface of the red planet. This football sized instrument has now been sitting quietly on the Martian surface for more than two Earth years listening almost continuously to the heartbeat of the planet.  Since the first detection of a marsquake in April of 2018, the team has identified hundreds of events that can be used to peer into the heart of Mars. What is causing these seismic events? What has InSight taught us about Mars? How have the InSight data surprised us? In this talk I will present an overview of the InSight mission and address these key questions. I will also spend time discussing some innovative strategies developed within the InSight team that use the Martian atmosphere to look under the surface of the planet. Finally, we will finish with some perspectives future extraterrestrial seismic exploration to other places in the Solar System.
