The fluxgate magnetometer has been developed in order to measure magnetic fields produced where the solar wind interacts with the coma of the comet. It will also provide complementary information on any magnetic field generated by the nucleus, in co-operation with the ROMAP instrument. It will be mounted on a 1.5 m long boom outside the orbiter.
