The Open University in Scotland is delighted to be hosting the Tree Trail & Flower Theorum challenges at the Glasgow Science Festival 2021.

We challenge you to complete the following code breaking and maths puzzles! These activitiues will be held in the Gazebos in the front of the Main Glasshouse at Glasgow Botanic Gardens.

1. Tree Trail Treasure Hunt

This activity is linked to the Glasgow Botanics Tree Trail Online, created by the Friends of Glasgow Botanic Gardens. The tree trail allows you to explore the Gardens and using a mobile device, scan a QR code located on the plant labels to learn more about 20 specimens featured.

Your task is as follows:

  • Pick up the Treasure Hunt challenge sheet from The Open University team
  • Work out the codebreaking puzzles. Each answer is the name of a tree on the Tree Trail
  • Visit each tree from your codebreaking puzzle and scan the QR code to find information on that tree from the Friends of the Glasgow Botanic Gardens website
  • Use that info to answer trivia questions
  • Return your completed answer sheet to collect your prize

2. Colouring Challenge

  • Your challenge is to colour a flower so no two neighbouring regions are the same colour. Introducing you to the Four Colour Theorum.

Activities are free of charge and booking is not required. More info on the Glasgow Science Festival website
