Drawing of a tiling pattern.

The Open University is delighted to be presenting this interactive online workshop at the Edinburgh Science Festival 2021.

Patterns and symmetries are abundant all around us, in nature and in the arts. In this two-part workshop you will uncover the mathematics behind tilings and patterns found within nature and in the word of architecture, before creating your own geometric art masterpiece.

Part one of this workshop will introduce you to some intriguing patterns that naturally occur in ‘forbidden’ space crystals. Anything you see in such a pattern will be repeated over and over again, while the pattern as a whole can never exactly repeat.

In the second half of this hands-on workshop, participants will explore tessellations and create their own Islamic geometry-inspired mathematical artwork to take home.

Book your ticket via the Edinburgh Science Festival website. Event is suitable for ages 12+.

There is a wide range of free learning about mathematics on the OU site OpenLearn, such as Everyday Maths 1
