What this lab helps me to achieve

  • prepare samples for TEM or SEM
  • process cell or tissue samples for TEM - dehydrate, embed in resin
  • section or microsection hard blocks down to 50 nm thickness
  • carbon or gold coat your sample for SEM
  • use TEM or SEM and image your sample (resolution down to 1 nm)
  • analyse morphology of your biological sample
  • determine presence of an antigen in a cell or tissue
  • determine elemental composition of your sample
  • map elements present in your sample onto the TEM or SEM image
  • investigate grain size or orientation in a material
  • take large data set from TEM and 3D reconstruct your region of interest.

Who can use it

  • all STEM students, academics, visiting researchers.

What instruments are there

  • transmission electron microscopes TEMs with EDS (EDX)
  • scanning electron microscopes SEMs with EDS (EDX) and EBSD
  • microprobe
  • ultra-microtomes
  • resin embedding facility
  • ovens
  • freeze-dehydration instrument
  • critical point drying instrument
  • carbon coater
  • gold coater
  • glow discharge facility
  • imaging PCs able to handle large data sets
  • dark room.
