Scholarship Seminar - Handling astronomical datasets: Teaching Students, Teaching Computers and Teaching Students to Teach Computers

Dates
Thursday, December 2, 2021 - 14:00 to 15:00

Speaker:   Stephen Serjeant (The Open University)

Abstract: Ironically for a distance education university, the OU is typically terrible at communicating >between< schools about our research and teaching. OU astrophysics research is now making extensive use of machine learning technologies, such as convnets, denoising autoencoders, and more.

Meanwhile, our OU astro/physics curriculum is rapidly expanding its python provision with a view to creating new machine learning projects at masters level, as well as having formalised ML and data science training for postgrads. This talk will summarise some of our research and teaching, and (hopefully) identify ways that we might collaborate.
