Students have ranked The Open University (OU) as the top institution in Wales for overall student satisfaction.

The National Student Survey (NSS) published today (15 July) gives The Open University (OU) in Wales an overall satisfaction score of 89%. This is compared to a UK average of 75% for all UK universities. The OU in Wales’ score has held steady over the past two years.

The OU currently has over 14,500 students across Wales. Forty per cent began studying without traditional university qualifications, and 45% come from some of Wales’ most disadvantaged areas. Two-thirds are in full-time or part-time work.

Across Welsh universities as a whole, the difficulties over the past year arising from covid have meant that student satisfaction has dropped, with an average of 76% saying they were satisfied with their course.

Louise Casella, Director of The Open University in Wales said:

“The coronavirus pandemic has touched every aspect of Welsh life. Welsh universities, their students and staff have all been affected.

“At The OU in Wales in 2020, our team moved to home-working practically overnight. We ensured that teaching and student support remained our top priority. Today’s result is testament to the hard work, commitment, and drive of those who teach and support our students.

“We’ve also been working with partners in other universities to share resources, ideas and skills to support their temporary move to online teaching during the covid crisis.”

The OU in Wales has seen student numbers more than double since 2017/18 as a growing number turn to supported online and distance learning to give them more flexible way to study. The support made available by the Welsh Government to part-time students since 2018 has ensured that people from a wide range of backgrounds are able to enter and succeed in higher education.
