This online resource enables you to follow the fictional and non-fictional journeys described in the four chapters of Part 2: Journeys in the long eighteenth century. Two versions of each of the journeys are traced:

• By selecting the markers on the journeys, you can see eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century paintings depicting events and destinations two centuries ago.
• By using the Google Earth application, you can see the routes and destinations on the globe as they are today. (Uncheck the 'Show map' check box in the top left corner of the Google Earth map.)

This page uses the Google Earth application which can be downloaded and installed for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari from the Google Earth site.

Once Google Earth is installed use the drop down lists below to select journeys and places of interest. You may need to click here to reload this page to view the map. You may use the buttons on the right to navigate around the globe. Use the 'Show map' check box to show or hide the map.
