Diary entry. October 20th, 1831: "Was in Mr. Boyd’s room before nine. Heard him say over the
passages in the Prometheus, & read Gregory. He told me that he had a great mind to buy a book
mentioned in Bohn’s catalogue, a very ancient edition of Gregory’s orations, price 2 £ -12-6* &
that in that case he wd. ask me to make Papa get it for him. He might receive the book from
me, & pay it from his private purse, -& so escape reproach extravagance from Mrs. Boyd.

Diary entry. September 19th, 1831: "He showed me his Benedictine edition of Gregory. It is in
high preservation, & very beautiful. I will get one like it, whenever I have next the use of
Fortunatus’s purse –or any purse, heavy enough. He allowed me to read a part of the
Apologetic, out of it ; a high privilege, granted on solemnly enforced conditions of not leaning
my arm on any part of page. I liked & admired much of what I read. I do like & admire
Gregory’s prose!! -& I enjoy reading a beautiful style so much the more, when I can read it
with one who enjoys it too –when I read it with Mr. Boyd".

very fine one. Then we read the exordium of The Orations against Julian. It is majestic —
μεγαλοφωνοτατος".

his marks with mien, in different copies, — & came to the conclusion, that our testes certainly do
agree!! And so they do".
