'Thank you very much for "Battle" [W. W. Gibson], but curse this nib. To me
it is not as good as Housman; some things appeal to me for setting, but not
strongly[.] The first is pretty and “Deaf” and “Comrades” I like best. The
last is good too … cheero for Gibson. I lent "Battle" to my platoon sergeant
for an experiment; and he particularly chose “Comrades”, which pleased me
… Did you read any account of that Asquith gathering of the poets to read
their own things? There was quite a long account in that deplorable rag the
"Weekly Dispatch". Davies seems to have been the chief figure of
importance, and Yeats of fun.’

‘ … thank you immensely for "Friends" [W. W. Gibson], an unforgettable
book … My town-pride received a shock yesterday—and my pocket. Cridland
and I went to Salisbury, which took us both by storm. The Cathedral is not
so fine as Gloucester, but the surroundings thereof, and the town beat
ours … I bought Cobbett’s "Rural Rides", in Nelson 6d edition, there are am
getting on very well with it …’
